Auction Listing and Garage Sale Information

Some tips when bidding at online auctions.

This link has some great tips on some basic online auction scams

When shopping at eBay, (especially in computers and electronics) watch out for multiple listings that look the same and have very few if any bids. This is a good sign of someone trying to hook an impulsive buyer. Here is an interesting forum discussion on this.

If you have a question on the item, ask the seller. If the seller fails to respond, look elsewhere.

Check the prices at your local Wal Mart. For much of the country prices will be cheaper at those at large merchants than on eBay.

The June 16, 2003 print version of US News and World Report has some unique information on avoiding online auction scams. Some tips in this report include:

  • Be wary of items listed for sale in the US but later revealed to be from overseas.

  • Avoid escrow services that don't have their own means of taking money securely.

  • Avoid emails from both buyers and sellers with claims of better deals.

  • Don't use a credit card to make a wire transfer. Credit cards have charge-back protection, using the card to make a wire transfer removes that protection.

CD's - With the growth of online music buying services like Apple's iTunes and Napster, music CDs have really become quite a bargain on eBay. The "Wholesale Lots" category will often have cd's for around a dollar a cd.

Have a child that you need to buy formula? - eBay sells formula at a (depending on where you live) nice discount. Much of the discount disappears with shipping. An even better value are store coupons which sell for approximately 50% of face value for the preferred $5.00 and $10.00 coupons.

Get your Christmas shopping done early - Demand on eBay for anything that may be thought of as a Christmas gift increases around this time of year.

Always check Wal Mart - For new digital cameras, electronics and like items Wal Mart's prices will be comparable to anything eBay has to offer, and that is before shipping. Be especially wary of sellers that have multiple listings of a certain product.

Always check feedback - Always check the sellers feedback - Always check the sellers feedback
