Old Leica Cameras
Leica cameras have been around since 1924 are famed for their classic
good looks and durability. These are the cameras that popularized
35 millimeter photography. There are so many copies on the market,
a beginning collector would be smart to learn the details of what
they look like before they purchase the first of these gems.
Right next to the Leica logo on the lower picture is the serial number
for this particular camera. From these serial numbers you can learn
when the camera was built and the model. This particular camera is
a Model IIIa made in 1937. Use the serial number to learn what your
camera should look like. The lens on this particular camera was made
in Russia. More desirable lenses are made in Germany. In 1996 the
pictured camera could be purchased for $125 to $170. Today the same
camera could be had at eBay for roughly the same price. Accessories
and various lenses can increase the price. These cameras are so durable
that one that can still be used to take pictures will demand a price
approximately 40% higher than one that can be enjoyed just for looks.
Starting in the 1950's
Leica made the M series cameras. These cameras are much more valuable with prices
starting at around $1000 in mint condition in 1996, and starting at $1300 today.
In order to bring a premium price these cameras have to be in unused condition.
