Is
it a Hummel?
Sister MI Hummel began producting her wonderful drawings
and paintings of small children while in the Convent of Siessen in Bavaria. Her
work was published in two dimensional form as early as 1934 by Emil Fink Verlag
who produced art prints, cards and books. Franz Gobel began producing Hummel figurines
in March 1935.
At first glance it may be hard to tell but of the three pieces
above only one is a Hummel. The other two are reproductions. Here is a couple
of ways to tell if a piece is a Hummel.
Signature: Where possible
all Hummels will have the signature of Sister MI Hummel incised on the base of
the piece.
Mark: A Goebel stamp will apear on the bottom of the collectible.
The stamp has changed over the years. Go to http://www.mihummel.com/index_reference.html
to see a listing of the marks.
